Creating Crystal Button (Part 2)

Step 1.
Open the file from Part 1 tutorial. Click on Layer 2 while holding the Ctrl key to select the crystal ball.

Step 2.
From the Select menu, select Modify -> Contract... enter a value of 5 to reduce the selected region by 5 pixels. Click Select -> Save Selection... and enter a name to save the selection.

Step 3.
Switch to Channels Palette, you will see that the previously saved selection (in this example, 1) Make sure that both the RGB layer and the new layer (1) are both visible (have an eye infront of them)

Step 4.
With Selection tool (by pressing M key), select a region which covers about 2/3 of the crystal button. Switch to Brush tool (B key) and paint it with black color. Press Ctrl-D to clear the selection box.

Step 5.
Select Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur... from the menu and enter a value of 8 pixels.

Step 6.
Press Ctrl-L to open the Levels... dialog and enter the following value in Input Levels field:
73, 1.00, 158

Step 7.
Hold down Ctrl key and click layer 1 under the Channel palette to make the selection, switch over the Layers palette and create a new layer. A new layer (Layer 4) will be created.

Step 8.
Select the Gradient Tool and set its color from White to Transparent. then drag a line in top-down direction on the selected region.

Step 9.
Set the Opacity of Layer 4 to 90%.

Step 10.
The final result:
